Entry: PAINTBALL Jul 19, 2004

ok, keeping up with my usual habit of only reporting an event after everyone's forgotten about it, here is my PAINTBALL update.

A bunch of us (Me, Azam, Joe, Shane, Izwan, and Lars the Norwegian viking terminator), went for a paintball session last Saturday. We'd been planning it for a while, and finally managed to leave it till the last weekend before term started.

Reached the place, all hyped up and ready to go, got our combat gear, got our paintballs, and sat through the briefing, just itching to go in and spray someone.

We were there for about 3 hours, in which time we had about 4 games, in jungle terrain, a pretty nice fort and junkyard area, and a capture the flag game on two banks of a creek connected by a bridge. Of course, it wasn't just us playing, we joined up with lots of other groups so the games resembled miniature wars. it was about 30-40 odd people on each side. In other words, the probability and frequency of you getting hit was suddenly a lot higher.

We were divided up into our teams: Yellow and Orange (whose stupid idea was it to make the team colours yellow and orange anyway, seeing as they both look almost the same. Not to mention the visors were orangish tinted, making it even harder to tell friend from foe..... not like it mattered, truthfully... i just sprayed anyway XP).

The memory of the whole thing was a little fuzzy actually, what with all the little colourful pellets of death flying everywhere, sweat dripping into your eyes, hands and knees raw from scrambling about everywhere in the dirt. It was exhilarating... =) The first game was a simple sabotage mission. One team defending a bunker, another team attacking from across a junkyard-like field. The objective was for the attacking team to reach the bunker without getting shot, and pull the cord on the 'bomb' already planted there. Easier said than done. As soon as we left the cover of our shed on assault, the sudden realisation of what was about to happen to you was imminent. You could barely see where the enemy was. You could barely make out shifting objects in camouflage moving from tree to tree to barricade, all taking potshots in your general direction.

And suddenly.. you were very content to stay behind cover and return fire. Let others do the dirty work lol. But after a while, it's impossible to go through the game without getting hit at least once, and after that happened, you think 'ah what the hell... CHAAAARRGGEEEE!!!!11'

We won that mission eventually, someone managed to make it up to the bunker and pull the cord. And then it was our team's turn to defend. Not quite as difficult as assaulting, as all you had to do was stay put behind some reasonable cover and try to gun down anybody getting near the bunker. Managed to hit a few invaders, and was feeling pretty good, so i decided to move up a little. I leapt out from behind my cover, trying to move forward to another barricade, and a lucky fluke shot hit me in my groin. jesus christ, that hurt. i scrambled back up to the respawn point and lay there sobbing for a while. Why oh why didn't i buy a cup guard? T__T

The next game was another sabotage mission, where one team had to defend a fort at the top of a small hill, and the opposing team had to roll this blue oil drum (the bomb), up the hill, set it against the wall of the fort, and pull the cord. We started off on defense, doing pretty much the same thing as before, staying behind cover, trying to gun down advancing forces. Eventually, our front line of defense was whittled down to a few of us, behind small tyre barricades in front of the fort. And that was when we started to piss ourselves, as we looked down the hill, and saw the entire enemy force, 30-strong, slowly advancing to our position. And i was running out of paintballs. We frantically tried to hold them off, until... of all the things that could have happened, my paintball container fell off my gun. Right then, i snapped. I grabbed my gun, my container, and ran like hell to the back of the fort, where i frantically tried to reattach the stupid holder. Managed to make it to a high defense point inside the fort, where i was shot in the head moments later. How anti-climatic -__-;

More running around later, legs are starting to numb up, hands getting tired, vision getting blurry, we finished up and sat around, exhausted, dirty, hungry.. but happy. Our team had won the final set of games. Compared our bruises, caught a cab back to the city, made our way home. The next day my thighs were so numb i could barely walk.

It's now Monday, and i figured i'd better update about the paintball session before i left tomorrow for Sydney. I'm going snowboarding! w00t! I'll update when i get back 2 weeks later. |m/.
